Plans to extend an industrial site in Nottingham to offer the next generation of motorsport engineers hands-on experience in the sector have been approved.
The National Design Academy (NDA), which has delivered distance higher education courses for almost three decades, uses the unit at 33 Waterside Way in Colwick for its National Motorsport Academy.
Students taking part in Motorsport Engineering Degrees, which are run in partnership with Staffordshire University’s Automotive Engineering Centre, use the facility for work experience.
Other businesses based in the unit include Central Lotus, Paintseal Direct, Treadmark Tyres, DR Bodyshop, B.spoke furniture and Competitive Carbon Composites.
The NDA lodged plans with Nottingham City Council in February 2017 to expand the facility, proposing a wraparound glazed extension.
The additional floorspace will total 13,150 sq ft and will be used for light industrial work, specialist motorsport sales and exhibition space.
Council planners approved the application subject to a number of conditions.
A statement filed with the proposals said the extension will provide ‘economic and social benefits’ by creating jobs and providing students with further experience in the industry.
As part of the project, the Central Lotus sales operation will also be relocated to a prominent space and the facility will be home to the Lotus GTE Le Mans race car when not racing.
